FAQ — How Proffing Works

Getting Started — Which Account Type Is Right for Me?

What are the different account types on Proffing?

Proffing has three types of accounts:

Instructor / Speaker — You have expertise you'd like to share. You're looking for opportunities to teach courses, lead workshops, or give guest lectures at schools and organizations. Create a profile so schools and faculty can find you.

School or Organization — You represent a school, university department, company, or other organization. You're looking to hire part-time instructors or bring in speakers for courses and events. Post opportunities and search instructor profiles.

Faculty Member — You're a professor or instructor who wants to bring guest speakers or outside experts into your own courses. You can post speaker opportunities and search for speakers, without going through a full institutional sign-up process.

Can I be both an instructor and a school/faculty member?

Not within a single account — each account has one role. If you wear both hats (for example, you teach your own courses and also want to pick up additional teaching gigs elsewhere), we recommend creating separate accounts with different email addresses for each role.

This is admittedly an edge case and one we're thinking about for the future.

Do all account types require approval?

Instructor and Faculty accounts are active immediately after registration.

School and Organization accounts go through a brief verification step — typically 1–2 business days — to protect instructors from fraudulent postings. Faculty accounts are not subject to this review since they represent individual educators rather than institutions.

For Instructors

What should I include on my profile?

As much as you can! Remember, you want to make it as easy as possible for schools to understand what your skills and interests are, so they can match you with opportunities they may have available.

Also, consider proposing a specific course that you'd love to teach, whether or not it's a course you've taught (or that anyone has taught). Schools are always looking for new ideas for courses, especially new ideas from people who understand well what skills are needed in today's workplace.

Can I search other instructors' profiles? Can they search mine?

Technically, no. The site is currently set up to allow only registered schools and their representatives to search profiles.

Having said that, of course, oftentimes these representatives are, themselves, instructors. So, in some cases, there may be individuals who, over time, will sit in both roles, as instructor and school representative.

How much does it cost to join Proffing?

As of now, this is a free service, for both instructors and schools.

Why aren't there more teaching opportunities listed in my area?

We're slowly ramping up this site, making sure we get the details right first.

We agree — there should be more. Please spread the word about Proffing! And let us know if there are schools that would be a good fit and could benefit from connecting with instructors through the site.

My department/specialty isn't listed. What should I do?

Please let us know and we'll change it ASAP.

For Faculty Members

What can I do as a Faculty Member on Proffing?

As a faculty member, you can post guest speaker opportunities for your courses and browse instructor profiles to find speakers who match your needs. Your account is active immediately — no waiting period.

Think of it as a lightweight version of the school account, designed for individual educators rather than institutions.

Will my posted opportunities be visible to instructors?

Yes. Opportunities you post appear in the same listings that all registered instructors can browse and apply to. Your name and academic role will be shown as the contact.

For Schools

What services are provided?

Right now, we provide schools the opportunity to search through profiles of prospective part-time instructors and guest speakers. We also allow for free listing of teaching and speaking opportunities that instructors can search through themselves.

All of this is, for now, entirely free of charge. We hope to expand these services over time — let us know what you think the site is missing and what would help you connect with more and better instructors and speakers in your area.

Do I have to pay to list a teaching opportunity?

Nope. Right now, these services are all free of charge.
